Graduate Facilities

Have an idea? We have the space.

We provide all graduate students with facilities that are configured to the particular needs of students engaged in art education inquiry, art making, and design at a professional level. At MICA, you can have your own space, and community too.

Studios and Collaborative Workspaces

Full-time graduate students are provided independent studios or collaborative workspaces with 24/7 access while their classes are in session and during spring break periods for the duration of their residencies. Full-time MFA students maintain studio access during the summer months between their first and second year of study. Studio and graduate facility access will be limited or closed during designated college holidays, and other seasonal and break periods. Fred Lazarus IV Graduate Center

The recently expanded and renovated Fred Lazarus IV Graduate Center permanently houses twelve of our sixteen graduate programs, including full time and low-residency MFA, MA and certificate programs.

Located in the Station North Arts District, the Lazarus Center is a generously equipped modern facility and the hub of graduate study at MICA, housing independent studios and collaborative workspaces for over 175 graduate students, an indoor atrium and outdoor plaza, a public cafe, and public galleries. Also located on site are digital, computer and photo labs, wood and metal fabrication shops, dedicated meeting spaces, seminar rooms, casual lounges, and student exhibition and critique areas.

Hurwitz Study Center for Art Education

Graduate students in art education programs have access to the Hurwitz Study Center for Art Education, located in the new wing of Fred Lazarus IV Graduate Center. The Hurwitz Study Center includes a project lab, reading library, teaching materials, and computers available to support art education graduate students. Within this space, faculty and students intermix, conference, work collaboratively and study.

Graduate Research Lab

The Graduate Research Lab ("Grad Lab") is open to all graduate students. This state-of-the-art facility, located at the Fred Lazarus IV Graduate Center,  is equipped with computer stations, an electronics project room, a professional print lab, a sound studio, and a variety of video and audio equipment available for checkout along with a staff of expert users. Students can conduct their own technological research or attend weekly tutorials and workshops.

Graduate Exhibition Space

Sheila & Richard Riggs Gallery, Leidy Gallery, and Fox 3 Gallery are dedicated graduate exhibition spaces. Graduate students have the opportunity to exhibit in other galleries on campus and in the greater community through individual programs or student organizations such as Grad Ex. Visit the Galleries page for more information about MICA's exhibition space.

Fabrication Studios

Fabrication studios accessible to all graduate students include Fred Lazarus IV Graduate Center Wood Shop, Fox Wood Shop, Model Shop, 2D Prototyping Studio, and Digital Fabrication Studio. Departmental studios are open to graduate students currently enrolled in related departmental classes. These studios include ceramics, fiber, interdisciplinary sculpture, photography, and printmaking. Visit Fabrication Studios to learn more.
