Office of Open Studies

MICA Open Studies is helping to define the Maryland Institute College of Art as a 21st-century leader in the education of artists and designers.

The Open Studies office serves as a center of entrepreneurship, a place for enhancing community education and professional practice, and an access point where design, technology, and commerce converge.

Each semester (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer), MICA provides a wide range of community fine arts and design courses, professional development opportunities, young people's programs, and art-based travel experiences.

Coronavirus / COVID-19 Update

MICA has made the decision to cancel Community Education, Professional Practice, YPS, and ADCAP classes through the end of the spring term effective March 13, 2020. The online Professional Practice course, Information Visualization Basics will not be cancelled.

For those enrolled in a Spring Community Education, Professional Practice, or YPS course , our office will provide you with a refund for the balance of your tuition or you may opt for a 50% discount for a Fall 2020 Community Education, Professional Practice or YPS course.

Please let us know if you would prefer a refund or a discount on a fall class by emailing us at openstudies@mica.edu:

  • 1.  Your name.
  • 2.  The name/s of the classes in which you are enrolled.

This decision is for the spring term only.   As the situation around coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to rapidly evolve, MICA remains vigilant in monitoring updates and implementing measures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and has created this webpage to provide information and resources, copies of official campus memos and details about preventative measures the College is taking. Thank you for entrusting us with your ongoing education.  We hope you remain safe and healthy during these uncertain times.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact the Office of Open Studies at openstudies@mica.edu

Community Education

Through Community Education courses, taught by MICA’s excellent faculty, adult artists can build skills and develop confidence in a variety of fine art disciplines. Introductory courses provide the foundation for learning techniques and concepts while advanced courses encourage students to further explore their creativity.

Professional Practice

Design professionals can advance their knowledge through MICA’s Professional Practice courses in the areas of graphic design, web design, advertising, and creative entrepreneurship. Real-world issues are discussed and innovative projects are assigned to provide a well-rounded, meaningful experience aimed at preparing students for challenges that are faced in art and design careers.

Undergraduate Classes

Each winter & summer, the Undergraduate courses are designated as three-credit classes and are open to MICA undergraduates and all serious-minded students, including community education students.
