September 16: Jutta Koether
Jutta Koether is a multi disciplinary artist known for her paintings, performance, music, writing and other activities. Born in 1958 in Cologne, she is Professor at the Hochschule für bildende Künste in Hamburg, Germany. Her abstract paintings, with their translucent interconnected web patterns, fragments of texts and songs, are like a portrait of the artist in our times. She has been a strong creative presence on many cultural fronts for more than 2 decades as she became known for her feminist, punk/pop-influenced engagement with contemporary theory and culture. She has exhibited artworks and played music internationally. Her work is in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, Kunsthalle Bern, Switzerland, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA, the Nationalgalerie, Berlin, Germany, Musee d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris, France. As well as she has written about art for Texte zur Kunst, FlashArt and Artscribe.
September 22: James Siena
James Siena creates paintings, drawings, and prints in which hand-rendered procedural abstractions, methodically executed, cover a wide range of modalities and produce multiple visual and psychological effects. Siena's work stimulates both the eye and the brain. Tactile, compressed and intricate, the work is above all physical.
James Siena was born in California in 1957 and received his BFA in 1979 from Cornell University. Siena's recent solo exhibitions in New York and Los Angeles have been greeted with great critical acclaim. He was included in Greater New York show, 2000, at PS1-MoMA in Long Island City, Queens. A ten-year survey of his work, originating at The San Francisco Art Institute, traveled to The University of Akron, in Ohio in 2003. He has also been included in important thematic exhibitions at the University Art Museum in Long Beach, California (By Hand: Pattern, Precision and Repetition in Contemporary Drawing, curated by Mary-Kay Lombino) and Kent State University (Accumulations, curated by Martin Ball), both 2001; and the University Galleries at Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois (Post-
Hypnotic, with a catalogue by Barry Blinderman and Tom Moody), in 1999; as well as at the Weatherspoon Art Gallery in Greensboro, N.C.. In 2000, he received an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters Invitational Exhibition. In 2004, he was selected for the Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
Siena's works are in many public institutions and collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. In 1999 he was a recipient of the prestigious Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Competition Award. He has taught at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, New Jersey, Virginia Commonwealth New York.
September 30: Henry Taylor
Henry Taylor was born in 1958, Oxnard, CA. He lives and works in Los Angeles. Taylor's paintings represent a heterogenous domesticity that is as much a part of his Los Angeles surroundings as it is a part of community as a whole. Taylor received his bachelor of arts from California Institute of the Arts and has had solo exhibitions at MOMA PS1, Santa Monica Museum of Art, and Studio Museum in Harlem. October 7: Barnaby Furnas
Barnaby Furnas was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1973 and lives and works in New York. Furnas makes paintings on the brink of chaos. His large explosive paintings recast the genre of history painting in the vernacular of the video game era. Selected solo exhibitions include the Museum of Modern Art, Fort Worth, Texas (2007), and at Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver (2009). Selected group exhibitions include the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY (2011), the Ullens Center, Beijing (2010), and the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston, Texas (2008). Furnas was included in the 2004 Whitney Biennial, and is represented by Marianne Boesky, New York, Anthony Meier Fine Arts in San Francisco and Victoria Miro, London.
October 28: Laura Newman
Laura Newman is an abstract painter who lives and works in Brooklyn. Her modest paintings engage in a complex visual dialogue that often masks their high level of sophistication. She has received fellowships and awards from The American Academy in Rome, the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, The American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the New York Foundation on the Arts. She has had a solo shows at Jen Bekman Gallery, 1 GAP Gallery, The Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University, Lesley Heller Workspace and Bellwether Gallery. Her work has been included in many group exhibitions, recently at Fordham University, Lesley Heller Workspace and Janet Kurnatowski Gallery, and at The National Academy of Art, Monya Rowe Gallery, The Weatherspoon Museum of Art, and The New Museum among others. . Born in Cleveland, Ohio, and educated at Cooper Union, the California Institute of the Arts, and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, she teaches painting and drawing at Vassar College.
November 11: Lisa Beck
Lisa Beck graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a BFA in film. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Her artworks, with their innovative use of mediums and modes including painting, sculpture and installation, often in combination, push at the limits of painting. Beck’s work has been exhibited in the United States and internationally in venues including Feature Inc. (New York), Paula Cooper Gallery (New York), de Pury & Luxemburg (Zurich), Gallery Samy Abraham (Paris), Le Magasin (Grenoble), PS1 (Long Island City), White Columns, (New York), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco). “Endless” a survey show of her works from 1985-2012 was presented in Lyon, France at the Fort du Brussin Contemporary Art Center in 2013. Her work has been included in the several books including Painting Abstraction: New Elements in Abstract Painting by Bob Nickas, (2009, Phaidon Press) and Are You Experienced? by Ken Johnson (2011, Prestel). Feature Inc, her long-time gallery, published Yes, No, Something, Nothing, Never, Always, a monograph on her work in 2012. Lisa was a recipient of the 2012 Marie Walsh Sharpe Space Program Studio Residency in Brooklyn.
November 18: Nora Griffin
Nora Griffin (b. 1982) is a painter and writer who lives in Brooklyn, NY. She is part of a group of younger artists whose engagement with imagery and form undermines traditional distinctions between figurative and abstract painting. In her words, "the borders are always shifting between the flat picture plane and the painted object. I often make my own frames for the paintings and it's my hope that a playful confusion between reading and seeing manifests itself in my work.” Griffin contributes reviews to Art in America, The Brooklyn Rail, and artcritical.com. She shows with Louis B. James in New York; recent exhibitions include Off White Desert and NADA NY in Spring 2014. Griffin has taught drawing at Columbia University and has served as a thesis advisor at the School of Visual Arts. Fellowships include the Edward F. November 25: Marc Handelman
Marc Handelman is a painter who has worked across media including film/video, installation and book arts. His recent projects have frequently examined the strange afterlife of the genre of landscape and conceptions of “Nature” as an ongoing and naturalized assembly of political order. Marc Handelman has exhibited extensively throughout the United States as well as internationally in such venues as PS1 MoMA in Long Island City; The Studio Museum in Harlem; The American Academy of Arts and Letters, The Rubin Museum, (all New York, NY); The Dayton Art Institute, OH; The Orlando Museum of Art, FL; and the Royal Academy of Art in London, UK. He is a graduate critic at Columbia University’s School of the Arts and an Assistant Professor of Visual Arts at Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University.
