September 15: Cora Cohen

Born in Manhattan in 1943, Cora Cohen studied at Bennington College (B. A. 1964, M. A. 1972) with Paul Feeley and Lawrence Alloway. Her work draws from contemporary urban and philosophical sources, the current paintings, altered x-rays, and drawings are based on seemingly contradictory ways of seeing and making. As acts of erasure follow figuration, discernible imagery gives way to uncertainty, waywardness, and displacement.

Cohen has over 40 solo shows to her credit in New York, Berlin, Köln, Bonn, Houston, Weisbaden, and numerous other cities around the US. Her works have been written about extensively in The New York Times, The Brooklyn Rail, Art in America, Art News, Flash Art, The New Yorker, Time Out New York, New York Magazine, ArtNet Magazine, openpr.de, and on artcritical.com. Cohen’s work is in the permanent collection of the Swedish State Arts Council, Stockholm; The Ulla and Heiner Pietzsch Collection, Berlin; the Weatherspoon Art Museum, Greensboro; The William and Uytendale Scott Memorial Study Collection of Works by Women of The Bryn Mawr College Art and Archaeology Collection, Bryn Mawr; Yale University, New Haven; and the Neuberger Museum of Art, Purchase.

Cohen is the recipient of a 2013 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship Award, and grants from the NEA (1987), the New York Foundation for the Arts (1989), the Gottlieb Foundation (1990, 2006), The Pollock/Krasner Foundation Award (1998), a Yaddo Residency (1982), The Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation Space Program Residency (2008-2009), and The Edward F. Albee Foundation Residency (2009). Her current studio is in Long Island City, New York.

 

September 22: Nicola Lopez

Nicola Lopez received her MFA from Columbia University in 2004 and her BA from Columbia University in 1998. In 2002 she attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. She has had solo exhibitions at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in NY, the Savannah College of Art & Design Museum of Art, the Arroniz Arte Contemporaneo in Mexico City, Elizabeth Leach Gallery in Portland, OR, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Cusco, Perú, Pace Prints Gallery in New York and the Chazen Museum; Madison, WI amoung many others. Her work is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of Modern Art, the Detroit Institute of Art, Chazen Museum in Madison, WI the Davison Art Center Collection at Wesleyan University, the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe among others. She has been the recipient of numerous awards including residencies in Oaxaca, Mexico at La Calera Residency and La Curtiduría, the Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito, the Assilah Summer Moussem Artist Residency in Morocco, and The Inside-Out Residency in Beijing. She was awarded a NYFA Fellowship in Drawing/Printmaking/Book Arts and a Joan Mitchell Foundation MFA Graduate Award.

 

September 29: Dennis Congdon

Dennis Congdon has a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Yale School of Art. He is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome winning a Prix de Rome in 1983. In 2002 he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship. Recent solo shows include exhibitions at Horton Gallery, the CUE Art Foundation in NYC, and at P G Contemporary in Houston. In 2014 he showed at kijidome in Boston. Zeiher Smith & Horton presented his work at the Untitled Art Fair in Miami and this year at the Dallas Art Fair. His solo show at the gallery will open in September. His work was included in the 2015 Foster Prize biennial at the ICA Boston and he will participate in the upcoming Eden, Eden show at the Romain Torri Gallery in Paris.

 

October 13: Maria Fisahn

Maria Fisahn was born in 1949, and lives and works in Hamburg, Germany. She studied at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf in the master class of Joseph Beuys and later in the class of Gerhard Richter, graduating in 1976 with degrees in Fine Art, theory, practice and education. She served as an interim professor at the Hochschule für Bildene Kunst in Braunschweig and also taught drawing at the Muthesius Hochschule in Kiel, and installation in the Fachhochschule in Hannover.

She is a co-founder of the first artist house for activism in Weidenallee /Frise, where she curated and organized exhibitions. Begun in the late seventies it is still active today. She also founded and curated her own artist museum Das Erdbeermuseum in collaboration with the Museum Schwerin 2009. She has exhibited artwork and performed nationally and internationally since 1974. Solo performances in the Kunsthalle Hamburg and Staatliches Museum Schwerin. Her solo exhibitions include Galerie der Gegenwart /Kunsthalle Hamburg, Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Karl Ernst Osthaus Hagen, Museum Staatliches Museum Schwerin Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, Artemisa Gallery, Chicago, Margaret Thatcher Projects and Monique Goldstrom in New York, Stätische Galerie Sofia, Bigli University-gallery Istanbul, Kunstverein Cuxhaven, Galerie Kammer, Hamburg, Galerie Brhel in Schwerin, and Westwerk in Hamburg.

Her work is in the collections of Kunsthalle Hamburg, Museum Schwerin, Karl Ernst Osthaus Museum, Hagen, Staatliches Museum, Schwerin, Frauenmuseum Bonn, the city of Hamburg/Kulturbehörde, WGZ Bank Berlin and many private collections. She received grants and awards from the Villa casa Baldi Olevano in Romano, an artist residency in Umbria, Italy and Feital, Portugal, Stadt Hamburg fellowship in 1989, catalogue support from the Kulturbehörde in Hamburg, film production support for directing and story book of a film project in Kenia by Filmbüro Hamburg and Kuratorium Junger Deutscher Film. She also received travel fellowships to USA in 1974, and to Benin, Africa in 2000, and to Myanmar in SE Asia in 2012.

October 26 & 27: Matt Shane

Matt Shane was born in 1981 in Vancouver, BC. He divides his time between a few different places, but mostly lives in Montreal. Shane makes paintings, drawings, and collaborative installations that are anchored in the realm of landscape. His pictorial worlds aggregate elements from found images, photos and memories. They follow a Romantic lineage, but arrive at a mercurial ground, at the border of perception and fantasy.

Shane has done solo and collaborative exhibitions in Canada, the U.S., Europe and Dubai. His large-scale drawing environments are produced with collaborative partner Jim Holyoak, and often involve hundreds of participants. He has received numerous grants and awards and done residencies at NKD Norway, Cuadro Dubai, Wander Den Haag, Art Omi NY, KIAC Dawson, the Banff Centre and the Vermont Studio Centre. He received an MFA from Concordia University in 2013.

 

November 3: Amy Feldman

Amy Feldman (b.1981) resides in Brooklyn. She received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Rutgers University. Feldman was Visiting Faculty at The Cooper Union in 2014 and an artist-in-residence and Visiting Faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University. She was selected as the Robert Motherwell Fellow at The MacDowell Colony. Feldman received a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant in 2013. She has also been awarded a New Jersey State Council on the Arts Grant, and has received fellowships from VCU Arts and the Fountainhead Foundation, The Henry Street Settlement at the Abrons Art Center, Yaddo, the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Chicago.

 

November 17: Yevgeniya Baras

Yevgeniya Baras is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Yevgeniya has a BA and MS from the University of Pennsylvania (2003) and an MFA in Painting and Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (2007). Yevgeniya’s work has been exhibited at numerous galleries in New York including: Steven Harvey Fine Art Projects, Kinz + Tillou Fine Art, Zürcher studio, Asya Geisberg Gallery, Allegra LaViola Gallery. She has also shown at Susanne Hilberry Gallery in Detroit, MI; Barbur Gallery in Jerusalem; Barbara Walters Gallery at Sarah Lawrence College; Real Art Ways Gallery in Hartford, CT; Adds Donna, Chicago, IL, and Jolie Laide, Philadephia, PA. Yevgeniya was named a 2014 recipient of the Rema Hort Mann Foundation’s Emerging Artist Prize and in 2015 she was selected for the Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program and the MacDowell Colony residency. Yevgeniya’s work has been reviewed in the New York Times, Art in America, and Artforum.

Five years ago Yevgeniya co-founded Regina Rex Gallery in Bushwick, NY. The gallery has moved from Bushwick to Lower East side in the Fall of 2014. Yevgeniya has curated and co-curated over twenty exhibitions at Regina Rex and other galleries in NY, Chicago, and Philadelphia.

 

November 24: Byron Kim

Byron Kim was born in 1961 in La Jolla, California he lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Kim graduated from Yale University in 1983 where he was a member of Manuscript Society where he is now a Senior Critic As well he attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1986.

In the early 1990s he produced minimalist paintings exploring racial identity by painting monochromes of various skin tones of friends and family. He gained early recognition for Synecdoche (1991–1992), his contribution to the 1993 Whitney Biennial, which embodied the aesthetic and political aspirations of the art in that year's exhibition. Synecdoche is a grid of 400 small, monochromatic paintings now in the collections of the National Gallery in Washington, DC.. Each panel recreates the skin color of an individual who sat for Kim while he painted their portrait. Although the works, at first glance, resemble minimalist paintings of the 1960s the racial and political dimensions became apparent after reading in the exhibition catalogue how the works came about. Kim also paints landscapes and makes photographic assemblages. His work sits at the threshold between abstraction and representation, between conceptualism and pure painting.
