MICA's Fiber department Multi Media Event class debuts perspectives on textile and place through annual fashion showcase

BALTIMORE — The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) presents "You Are Here," a Multi Media Event a debut of the work of 12 MICA students in the Fiber Department’s yearlong Multi Media Event I and II course. The annual showcase of student-designed fashions and performance takes place at 8 p.m. Friday, April 26 and 5 p.m. Saturday, April 27 in BBOX, 1601 W. Mount Royal Ave.

The work presented on these two nights was developed by 12 MICA undergraduate seniors in the class ranging from the majors of Painting, Ceramics and Fiber. The show will be presenting 12 perspectives on textile and place, activated and informed by light, sound, movement and props.

"This year's MME class spans a wide range of fashion-based work, puppetry, performance and art for the body. 'You Are Here' as a name to the show first came to the group in a response made during critique to a garment made by MME student Sarina Angell," Christina Day, instructor of the course, said. "The title of this show is an acknowledgement of the unique points of intersection that build in doing collaborative work. The framing mechanism of a live event provides each participating student a special kind of context that helps them realize the ambience, environment and greater ideas that surround their work."

Select fashion lines include:

  • "Familia Del Patio" by Madeline Lavosky was born from the designer researching her lost family history to create visual, wearable narratives.
  • "Interstellar Pro Wrestling" by Macy Peterman was created to show the designer’s love about professional wrestling with a line of gear to be worn in the ring, and extravagant entrance gear.
  • "Kalakari" by Sukalp Bhatija is a collection designed for all women of color, and fusing the two cultures of India and America together.  Kalakari balances traditional textiles from North India with nylon spandex and repurposed denim fabric.
  • "Category Is…" by Skip Chipps is a collection nspired by the counterculture scene of the Drag Balls of the mid to late 1980s in New York. Drag culture celebrates race, gender and sexual orientation, themes the designer celebrates through exaggeration, drama and sequins.
