WHAT: Poet Susan Stuart Mixed Media Series lecture

BALTIMORE — Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) is pleased to announce the first Mixed Media event of the spring semester, where poet, critic and translator Susan Stewart will speak. In addition to the lecture on Thursday, Stewart will also be giving a poetry reading at noon on Friday, Feb. 7 in Lazarus Auditorium. She will read from "Cinder: New and Selected Poems," as well as selections from newer work. 

Both events are free and open to the public.

MICA’s Mixed Media Series brings high-profile, globally recognized artists, designers, scholars, curators and educators working at the forefront of their fields to MICA’s campus for public talks, in-class presentations, studio critiques and other immersive activities with students and the community. 

The aim of the Mixed Media Series is to build important and imaginative public events that address the diversity of practice in our fields and the complex relationships between art, culture, identity, politics and belonging in the contemporary world.

Stewart, the Avalon Foundation University Professor in the Humanities and Professor of English at Princeton University, is an author of many books of prose, including “On Longing,” “Poetry and the Fate of the Senses,” “The Open Studio: Essays in Art and Aesthetics,” and “The Poet's Freedom: A Notebook in the Making.” Her books of poetry include “Columbarium,” which won the National Book Critics Circle Award, as well as her recent “Cinder: New and Selected Poems.” 

She is a former MacArthur Fellow (unofficially known as a "Genius Grant"), Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets, Berlin Prize Fellow and member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
