General Purpose
The Diversity Mentoring Network (DMN) supports the academic and social growth of first year students. DMN is designed to support all students, with an intentional focus on historically marginalized identities. We currently have four mentoring networks: Asian Identity Mentoring Network, Black/African Diaspora Identity Mentoring Network, Latinx Identity Mentoring Network and LGBTQIA+ Identity Network.
Summary of Essential Functions
Peer Mentors and Mentees meet weekly to discuss a variety of topics, including locating resources on campus, getting a handle on time management, sharing personal experiences and overcoming challenges, establishing positive habits, goal setting, and getting connected to campus life.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain relationships with and provide assistance and support for 2-3 mentees through informal check in meetings throughout the academic year
- Attend biweekly meetings and/or workshops
- Communicate with mentee(s) weekly
- Attend at least two CII sponsored events per semester
- Work collaboratively with team members to plan, promote, and coordinate monthly workshops
- Be comfortable interacting with students individually and in groups
- Be willing and able to serve as a resource to students – this includes providing correct information as well as having good listening skills when interacting with both students in addition to faculty, staff, and administrators.
- Read and respond to all emails in a timely manner
- Must represent the CII and MICA with professionalism at all times.
- Keep the CII student lounge, student workspace, office area, and storage space clean.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Can make a one year commitment
- Possess and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA
- Be a sophomore, junior, senior in good academic and college judicial standing
- Be a role model, possess a positive attitude, and an ability to work well with people from all backgrounds
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- Demonstrated leadership potential
- Sincere desire to represent CII events and MICA
Reporting
Reports to the Director of Identity and Inclusion
Conditions of Employment
- All Peer Mentors are REQUIRED to participate/assist in the following events, trainings, etc.
- Fall Leadership Retreat
- Joint Training
- First year Orientation
- Spring Leadership Retreat
- Open House tabling events (DCs will be assigned on a rotating basis)
Compensation
$400 per semester
