Student Space Gallery Manager

General Purpose

The Student Space Gallery Manager (SSGM) directly supports the Student Space Gallery program, which aims to provide undergraduate students with an opportunity to exhibit their artwork on campus.

Summary of Essential Functions

  • The Student Space Gallery Manager (SSGM) will provide overall supervision to the four student galleries on MICA’s campus, Pinkard, Gateway 1 & 2, and Meyerhoff Piano Gallery.
  • The SSGM will manage the operations of the gallery spaces, communicating with and supporting artists exhibiting in the galleries, as well as provide outward facing general information/marketing regarding current and upcoming exhibitions.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Advising (40%) 

  • Provide assistance for installations and de-installations which may include but not be limited to: advising on and executing installation plans, lifting/moving objects, installing hanging material, advising on how to patch and paint, advising and assisting on printing/hanging wall text/labels, etc. 
  • Advise accepted artists on necessary steps to create a successful exhibition from application acceptance, to installation, to de-installation 
  • Deliver feedback to artists not selected upon request 
  • Advise applicants as needed  

Operations (25%) 

  • Prepare gallery space for exhibitions/receptions 
  • Maintain general cleanliness of gallery space & safety of artwork on exhibit 
  • Track & record attendance at receptions 
  • Maintain an understanding of MICA Exhibition policy/procedures/resources 

Marketing, Recruitment, Communication (25%) 

  • Promote SSG exhibitions by preparing information about upcoming applications & shows for CSE publicity materials such as: social media, print publications, posters, flyers, gallery prospectus, etc. 
  • Digitally document shows and archive past exhibitions 

Other (10%) 

  • Organize Jury hiring, Jury meetings/artist application review, and sit as a non-voting member of the Jury. 
  • Other duties as deemed necessary by Assistant Director of Student Involvement

  • Demonstrates efficient time management while prioritizing workload 
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail 
  • Strong communication and interpersonal relationship skills
  • Ability to deliver constructive feedback
  • Ability to assist with exhibition install/de-install 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a currently enrolled MICA student

  • Must be in good academic/judicial standing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous gallery and/or exhibition experience strongly preferred
  • Curatorial experience a plus, but not necessary

Conditions of Employment

  • The SSGM position requires approximately 6-8 hours a week, and office days and hours are flexible for student schedule
  • Attend Joint Student Leader Training (August 21-22, 2020)
  • Attend SSG Jury Training (typically in mid-September)
  • Attend Spring Exhibition Selection Meeting (typically the first Saturday in October)
  • Attend Fall Exhibition Selection Meeting (typically the first Saturday in April)

Compensation

$900 stipend per semester ($1800 per year)
