Student Counseling Services

Calling All Externs

MICA is now accepting applications for our Extern Training Program for the 2019- 2020 school year. Our training opportunity will only be for qualified third, fourth, and fifth year students seeking college counseling center experience.

The Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) Student Counseling Center (SCC) offers training opportunities for advanced doctoral students in counseling or clinical psychology.  Our training program is designed to enhance trainees’ facility in providing brief assessment and diagnosis, short-term treatment, crisis intervention, and primary prevention/outreach on a college campus.  MICA’s population of approximately 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students come from around the country and the world to study art and design. Trainees will have the opportunity to work with domestic and international students, students who identify as sexual and/or gender minorities, and a range of other demographic backgrounds.  An appreciation for diversity is a core value at MICA and the Student Counseling Center.

MICA is one of the oldest and most highly regarded art and design colleges in the country.  Approximately 20% of our students seek services at SCC each year, and as such, SCC is respected across the campus for its work in promoting students’ health and wellbeing.  We are eager to welcome a trainee into the SCC and MICA community.

Expectations

Externs will spend 16 hours each week at SCC, typically completed over 2-3 days weekly including Monday or Tuesday evening, throughout the academic year.  They will participate in our group supervision and provide 8-9 clinical hours each week, to include intake/triage assessments, individual and group therapy, and crisis intervention.   SCC staff will provide at least one hour of individual weekly supervision in addition to group supervision. For their service, externs will receive a yearly stipend of $2500.

Application

Our externship is open to currently enrolled doctoral students enrolled in a counseling or clinical psychology program.  Applicants must have a minimum of two years of doctoral practicum experience, as ours is an advanced placement site. Doctoral students with experience and interest working with a) international student issues, b) issues of domestic students of color, c) sexual diversity, and/or d) trans and gender diverse students are strongly encouraged to submit their materials for consideration.  To apply, please submit the following materials in one PDF document:

  • A cover letter describing your interest in our site and relevant experience

  • Resume or CV Transcript from your program (unofficial is acceptable)

  • Three letters of recommendation from mental health professionals who are familiar with your clinical work (i.e., current or former supervisors)

The deadline is Friday, February 22 at 5pm EST.  We look forward to receiving your application!
