Graduate Open Studios

As part of the MICA Weekend festivities this Fall, the Offices of Graduate Studies and Graduate Admission invite current graduate students to participate in Graduate Open Studios this Fall in the Lazarus Center.

This event is free and open to the public and will be promoted widely to MICA Weekend registrants as well as the Baltimore community at large as a unique opportunity to browse and discover high quality art, design, illustration, film and works in progress from our current students in MICA's renowned graduate programs.

All graduate students are encouraged to participate.

  • Students who have studios in Lazarus Center are encouraged to open their studios to the public.
  • Students who do not have assigned studio spaces in Lazarus including our Open Studies programs, Summer Low Residency and students outside the Lazarus Center - will be given access to space on the 1st floor of the Lazarus Center.
  • Graduate Studies will provide tables, chairs, and wall space for students to create a display of your work.
  • Work can not be shipped/stored and participants must be present for the duration of the event.

In addition, we are excited to share the Graduate Student Voice Association will host three workshops and programs led by MICA graduate students during Open Studios including: Jessie Houff, paper making workshop; Frances Wertimer, Oral History Listening Booth; Julia Hsia, interactive knot-making artwork

We expect a great crowd and hope you will join us!

No. Open Studios is free and open to the public and there is no charge to participate as a student. However, all other MICA Weekend scheduled activities are ticketed. Current students who wish to attend other MICA Weekend activities pay an all-inclusive $5 fee which includes all meals.

Graduate Open Studios is conceived as an exhibition and networking opportunity, not a sales event. However successful networking could lead to productive business relationships for the future. Any student wishing to conduct business transactions outside of the event does so at their own risk. MICA is not responsible for any aspect of private sales and students are solely responsible for any resulting tax liability.

MICA Students with F-1 student visas are reminded that visa requirements prohibit you from collecting a profit from the sale of your work. Selling your artwork directly and receiving funds is prohibited. Failure to comply with your visa requirements will put your visa status at risk as well as any future plans to live and work in the US, including OPT. If you have questions about the requirements of your visa, please contact the Office of International Education.

Once the event starts, elevators in Lazarus will be unlocked and all floors will be accessible. While there will be security on hand as well as staff and volunteers on hand as floor hosts, Campus Safety has asked that students take precautions to protect their valuables. If you are not planning on attending, please take valuables outside of studio spaces, or keep them secured and away from public view. If you plan to be at the event, please make sure your studio or table is watched when you step away
