Sarah-Neel Smith specializes in the visual culture of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey from the nineteenth century to today; Orientalism and Islamic art in the museum; globalization and contemporary art; and post-9/11 visual culture in the United States.
Her writing has appeared in Art Journal, ARTMargins, Third Text, Bidoun, and frieze, and her research has been supported by the ACLS, Terra Foundation for American Art, and the Fulbright scholar program. At MICA, Smith teaches Modernism and After (1860-1960), Islamic Art and Architecture, and the advanced seminars Istanbul: Art and the City, Exhibiting the Middle East: Museums from the 19th Century to Today, Visual Culture of the Ottoman Empire (1839-1923), and Visual Culture of 9/11.
