Statement
J Dilla’s Donuts is an instrumental hip-hop album composed entirely with samples of other people’s music. Sampling Donuts examines the 64 unique songs sampled on the 31 mini-suites on Donuts as a venue for exploring the world of sample-based hip-hop and J Dilla’s production style. The project combines information from WhoSampled, a user-populated website of known hip-hop samples, with an applied hip-hop sample typology to show how and when J Dilla used those samples in his compositions.
