Ankara’s Bleeding Edge
Anthony Chukwu is a painter from Imo state, Nigeria. His work often has minimalist qualities and depicts scenes or portraits of his take on Afrofuturism. Chukwu also experiments with overlapping portraits or figure studies in gold and white on black backgrounds utilizing different line quality/ styles.
‘Ankara: Bleeding Edge’ uses a blend of colorful traditional fabrics sourced from Anthony’s heritage and inspiration from streetwear silhouettes to play with the idea of an Afrofuturist community. Introducing themes of extreme technological advancement and African culture coexisting may be the beginning of a new dialogue that addresses African concerns in the context of 20th-century technoculture. He will be attempting to combat the stereotype of what Africans are generally seen as.
