MICA offers a wide variety of on-campus employment opportunities. Below are a few common positions offered on a semester or yearly basis.  

CURATORIAL FELLOWS

Graduate Curatorial Fellows provide exhibition assistance to the MICA GRAD SHOW Curators supporting a multi-program, multi-location student-driven exhibition in MICA’s galleries and Station North. This exhibition, known as MICA GRAD SHOW 3, brings together students from 4 or 5 MFA programs in one group exhibition. In addition to supporting the curators’ work, Fellows are assigned a small group of participating student artists and attend related studio visits / planning meetings in and outside of gallery settings. Fellows have the option to coordinate supplemental programming in conversation with student artists, including talks and gallery tours.

GALLERY SITTERS

During the MICA GRAD SHOW season and ARTWALK, the Office of Graduate Studies works with galleries outside of the MICA campus to exhibit work. Gallery Sitters are responsible for welcoming visitors at off-campus galleries, taking attendance, providing helpful information regarding exhibitions and programs, and opening and closing the galleries.

GRADUATE RESEARCH LAB ASSISTANTS

Qualified students assist Graduate Research Lab patrons in four key areas: Sound, Video, Printing and Equipment. Specialized skills are required for these positions including the use of sound equipment, the use of video equipment, an understanding of color theory and management, an intermediate- to expert-level understanding of Photoshop, and an ability to help students problem-solve issues with prints, digital files and the basic use of equipment.

GRADUATE EXHIBITION ASSISTANTS

Graduate Exhibition Assistants attend training workshops in the fall semester in preparation to work alongside the MICA Exhibitions staff on a minimum of two art installations in campus galleries. Assistants will learn techniques for art-handling, moving, transportation, and packing and provide support for a variety of 2D, 3D, and technology based installations, as well as general gallery lighting. In the Spring and Summer semester, assistants will provide onsite installation support for Graduate Exhibitions and MFA Thesis candidates. A general knowledge of proper art handling techniques and safety, knowledge of technology based installations, as well as wall painting, preparation and tool skills desired.

GRADUATE PROGRAM ASSISTANTS

GPAs serve as key liaisons for critical information (campus events, registration, exhibitions, and other opportunities) from the Office of Graduate Studies to students within their programs. GPAs work collaboratively with Program Directors, Graduate Studies, Admission, and Student Affairs to facilitate efficient program operations.

STUDIO MONITOR

Studio Monitors work with the Environmental Health and Safety Manager to identify health and safety hazards and uphold MICA guidelines in independent studio spaces. The studio monitor will at times be required to lift up to 50 lbs. Studio Monitors must be available to work at least 10 hours per week. Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel is highly recommended.

WRITING STUDIO TUTORS

Writing Studio Tutors assist MICA graduate and undergraduate students with writing tasks, including academic essays, research papers, and artist statements. They also work closely with ELL students on conversational English as it applies to their coursework.

GRADUATE PROGRAM MANAGERS

The Program Manager is responsible for assisting the Center for Student Engagement with implementing graduate student programs, as well as the design and implementation of campus programs. Graduate Program Managers build community across departments and help to plan various graduate community events including the Winter Pie Party, Grad Picnic in May, and a series of Graduate Pop-Up Events.

GRADUATE TEACHING INTERNSHIPS

The goal of MICA's Graduate Internship Program is to provide our MFA and MA candidates, as developing professionals, the opportunity to take on technical and pedagogical roles within our institution, and thereby to learn from real world experiences typical of teachers and leaders in contemporary academic communities. In coordinating the placement of graduates in these many roles, the Graduate Internship Program supports aspects of curriculum development, tool maintenance and safety, and undergraduate pedagogy. While these internships greatly enrich the students' graduate school experience and better prepare them for post-graduate professional life, MICA also awards stipends to the interns in recognition of the knowledge, skill, and time they contribute.
