MICA is widely recognized for administering an impressive selection of semester and summer study abroad and exchange opportunities - a reflection of our strong commitment to educating artists and designers who wish to gain a global perspective to influence their practice.
The Office of International Education (OIE) manages study abroad and exchange programs in over 30 countries, as well as off-campus study opportunities in the United States through our partnership with the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design (AICAD) consortium. In addition to international program management, we offer comprehensive study abroad advising, information sessions and workshops, and logistical advice and support throughout every student's off-campus, or international experience. We partner with various student service offices on MICA's campus to condense the process, so students and their parents feel confident understanding how academics, financial aid, and others, apply to their overall experience.

The study abroad deadline is fast approaching! In order for us to approve, nominate and support your application with one of our exchange partners, or programming affiliates, the Office of International Education needs to receive your fall 2020 application no later than March 1, 2020.
If you have not done so, please attend one of our group advising sessions or any one of our information sessions (below) to research a program that is right for you. Preparing a study abroad application requires time. You will need proper advising from your academic advisor to select overseas courses for MICA credit; time to meet with the faculty chair of your respective major department for overseas course approvals; letters of recommendation from select faculty; and time to meet with a study abroad advisor to help chart your progress.

Hi Everyone!
Welcome to the Office of International Education at MICA.
It's not a cliche! Studying abroad will challenge and inspire you and, like many students, you will probably look back on your time abroad as one of the major highlights of your MICA undergraduate experience.
Many MICA students who go abroad return to campus with a greater understanding of themselves, develop new perspectives on world affairs, cultivate meaningful friendships, and contribute to the greater campus dialogue.
To get you there, and before you can start an application to study abroad, you need to attend a required Group Advising Session, so let's plan to meet each Wednesday of the semester in Bunting, Room 390, from 2:30 to 3:30 pm, to discuss the process. The first session, to kick off the Spring 2020 semester will be Wednesday, January 22. Group advising is designed for both the "just curious" student and the student who has seriously considered studying abroad and wants to start an application.
We also co-host a variety of information sessions provided by our affiliate and exchange program partners. Please take a moment now, to look at the next section (below) entitled: Study Abroad Information Series. Information sessions and advising are just some of the ways our office seeks to educate and inform the MICA campus community about the benefits of international education.
Study Abroad Information Series - Mark your Calendars!
At the start of each semester, the Office of International Education hosts study abroad and exchange partners on campus to learn about new programming initiatives. During these visits, our partners are genuinely excited to take time to meet with MICA students to discuss their respective programs. We highly recommend these information sessions, because you are getting in-depth information from an organizational colleague who works directly with the program's administration, both stateside and internationally. Successful information sessions are driven by your questions and curiosities. To get the most out of this type of session format, we ask that students take time to do basic research on the specific program, and help develop the conversation by sharing questions.
We also provide weekly group advising sessions, each Wednesday during the semester, which are required for students who are serious about starting their study abroad application. Group advising sessions are an opportunity for you to learn about how to select a program; learn about the MICA academic advising process; learn how to select foreign coursework; and how to successfully complete the online application before the deadline.
Lastly, our office offers general study abroad advising walk-in hours: every Tuesday through Friday, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm in Bunting, Room 200. From initial inquiry to advice on how to get a student visa, walk-in advising is a great option. Special Note: Each Monday, starting with Monday, January 27 to Monday, March 2, 2020, from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, we will conduct lunchtime study abroad advising in room 100A Meyerhoff, which is the small conference room, located next to the Office for Student Engagement. Tuesday, February 4, 2020 - SIT: Social, Political and Environmental Study Abroad Programs
For those interested in Social Justice, Politics, and the Environment, stop by to meet our colleague, Javonni McGlaurin, Institutional Relations Manager, SIT Study Abroad, to learn more about the study abroad opportunities that MICA co-sponsors with her organization. SIT programs are intensive and require students to take a set curriculum of professional topics and research methodologies courses, all of which culminate to a final capstone project. This is an academic program well-suited for Humanistic Studies majors who are looking for academic-based coursework and research opportunities.

Going to SACI, Fall 2020, or are you just curious about how to obtain a student visa in general? Join us in Bunting, Room 207, on March 20th, to meet Honorary Italian Consulate, Mauro Dal Bo, as he will offer information on how to obtain a student visa to study abroad in Italy. This is a required meeting for ALL students who were accepted to the SACI program for fall 2020.
Summer Travel Intensives Offered by the Office of Open Studies

Summer Instensives are open to undergraduate and graduate students, and life-long learners at least 18 years of age, who have completed at least one year of college study. Students travel with MICA faculty to places of great aesthetic and historical resonance, and to centers of contemporary art and design to earn undergraduate- or graduate-level college credit, enhance their art-making, and connect with art and other artists through MICA's Summer and Winter Travel Intensives.
